Bay program survey unveils promise and challenges of citizen stewardship

The Chesapeake Bay Program has released results of a comprehensive survey measuring the stewardship actions and attitudes of bay watershed residents that shows considerable progress yet much work ahead. The resulting Citizen Stewardship Index scored 24 out of 100, based on what actions people are taking and what portion of the public is volunteering in community efforts to improve bay health and participating in civic activities supporting the environment. A perfect score of 100 would mean everyone in the six states plus Washington, D.C., is doing everything they can in their daily lives to improve bay health - taking action, volunteering and advocating for the bay.
